Danville Virginia has experienced a renaissance in terms of redevelopment and investments in its downtown River District. Tobacco and textile warehouses have been converted to loft apartments, restaurants and specialty retail. The City has constructed an extensive riverside bicycle trail network and nearby mountain bike parks. Numerous streetscaping efforts have been completed with more underway. The Danville MPO is a local and regional partner that is highly supportive of
the City’s redevelopment efforts. As such, EPR has been working with the MPO (in close coordination with VDOT) on various transportation planning efforts throughout 2016 and 2017. Key projects include:
- River District Bicycle and Pedestrian Plan – this planning effort included extensive stakeholder and public input as EPR crafted recommendations for bicycle corridors, numerous pedestrian improvements, road diet transformations, and complimentary information to help build a pedestrian culture in the City while also providing robust bicycle facility improvements. The effort also helped to support the City’s recent bikeshare program currently in operation. (Budget $55,000)
- Mount Cross Road Corridor Study – this corridor has been the focus of numerous corridor planning studies over the last 15 years due to its growth potential, importance as an economic corridor, and its importance as a regional commuter corridor. Averett University has located an Athletic Complex with a 1,200 car parking lot on Dimon Drive, just north of the major commercial district served by Mount Cross Road. EPR provided recommendations to accommodate future and vent related traffic, meet the multimodal access needs of developments, and provide documentation to support funding applications and the implementation process. (Budget: $45,000)
