Danville Virginia has experienced a renaissance in terms of redevelopment and investments in its downtown River District. Tobacco and textile warehouses have been converted to loft apartments, restaurants and specialty retail. The City has constructed an extensive riverside bicycle trail network and nearby mountain bike parks. Numerous streetscaping efforts have been completed with more underway. Overall – Danville’s energy is re-emerging as an exciting downtown district.
The next step in Danville’s transformation is to improve multimodal accessibility throughout the downtown core. EPR, P.C. is working with the City of Danville on two complete streets efforts that include two key corridors in the district and an intersection traffic study. The planning effort is being conducted in close coordination with ongoing open space and park planning, and continued streetscaping efforts.
- Main Street Conversion – this project entailed a study of options and concepts to transform an auto oriented portion of main street into an inviting, multimodal environment. The plan culminated in detailed Complete Streets concepts (bike lanes, road diet, streetscape enhancements, traffic calming, etc.) along with recommendations for phasing and costs for each phase. (Budget: $18,000)
- Craghead Street Walkability Improvements – for this effort, EPR developed detailed concepts for transforming the old industrial access road into a highly walkable pedestrian corridor. The concept identifies, in detail with CADD files, curb extension locations, and signing and marking plans. The effort will be phased in with ongoing streetscape work in the corridor. Detailed cost estimates were also provided. (Budget: $25,000)
- Memorial Drive Intersection Improvements – the closely spaced intersections of Patton Street and Main Street along Memorial Drive and Craghead Street have been a downtown focal point and EPR considered multiple strategies to address queuing and improve driver behavior – from signal adjustments, road diets, to geometric modifications and signage, at this gateway location. (Budget: $15,000)
